TEACHER BIOS

Ellen Greenberg (director and founder) began her yoga studies in 1996. She opened Practice Yoga Studio in 2002. She has practiced various styles of yoga but since 2001, her practice has been influenced most profoundly by Iyengar yoga. Ellen continues to study with senior Iyengar teachers including Kofi Busia, Manouso Manos, Patricia Walden, Gabrielle Giubilaro, and Joan White. She spent December of 2011 at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute of Pune, India studying with the Iyengar family and is returning to the Institute in Pune in December 2013. She also has the ongoing privilege of hosting Genny Kapuler, Manouso Manos, Carrie Owerko, Kofi Busia and many others for workshops in Philadelphia.

Rebecca Hooper began practicing yoga in 1991, with the help of BKS Iyengar's book, Light on Yoga . She was certified to teach yoga in 2005 and since then has been a serious student of yoga philosophy. After studying different styles of yoga, Rebecca is in the process of Iyengar yoga certification. Her teachers are Joan White and Ellen Greenberg. She also studies with Kofi Busia, Carrie Owerko, and Patricia Walden. Rebecca has two sons and a background in the fine arts.

Jeanne-Marie Derrick is a certified Iyengar Yoga instructor, she was introduced to Iyengar Yoga in 1983, studied under Mary Dunn and was one of the original core faculty of the NYC Iyengar Institute. She is certified as a Yoga for Scoliosis instructor under Elise Miller. Therapeutic yoga has been a focus in her practice and teaching. Jeanne-Marie has taught workshops and teacher trainings both nationally and internationally. She also studies and practices Ayurveda and has extensive anatomical and physiological knowledge. She spent many years studying Women's Yoga and wrote a book in 2001: Yoga for Menstruation; a Practice Guide, in which she illustrated and elaborated Geeta Iyengar's teachings on women's yoga. She has another love and occupation of art and painting and is currently teaching at the Iyengar Institute in NYC.

Galit Carthy came across a book called "Yoga, the Iyengar Way" in 1999 which inspired her curiosity and marked the beginning of her yoga practice and study. In the years since, she has explored several styles of yoga and has been teaching since 2002. Galit is now pursuing a certification in the Iyengar method and is mentored by her teacher Joan White. In addition to being grateful for what she has learned from her students, Galit's most influential teachers are Ellen Greenberg and Kofi Busia. She has also been privileged to study with Manouso Manos and Dean Lerner.

Traci Childess began studying yoga in 1996, specializing in Iyengar yoga since 1998. She apprenticed with a certified Iyengar teacher in Berlin from 2000-2002, and subsequently completed a two year Iyengar Yoga teacher training program with Patricia Walden in Cambridge, MA. In 2005, she spent a month at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in India to take classes with members of the Iyengar family, and has been blessed to participate in many workshops and classes with amazing teachers over the past 10 years. She is firmly committed to the idea that every one should feel welcome to the practice of yoga and seeks to support this in her classes. She has two sons and co-directs the Children's Community School in West Philadelphia, where she integrates yoga and mindfulness into the curriculum.

Blake Rubin began practicing yoga in 2005. Upon moving to Washington, DC in 2007 he enrolled at the Unity Woods Yoga Center, studying with John Schumacher, his primary teacher, and Liz Marks. During that time he attended weekly classes, completed John's year long pranayama course, and attended various advanced workshops. Blake's interests include long distance running and biking, both of which inform and are informed by his yoga practice. He has taken numerous workshops with senior Iyengar yoga teachers, including Patricia Walden, Manouso Manos, Kofi Busia, Rajiv and Swati Chanchani, and Julie Gudmesta. In 2011, Blake moved back to Philadelphia and continues to study with Ellen Greenberg, Joan White and John Schumacher.
